A Journey Through Time:
The Evolution of LLCP
Lower Lacon Caravan Park traces its roots back to the aftermath of World War II when it emerged as the back entrance of the Aston Park American Army Camp—a munitions and distribution depot. Situated on land compulsorily purchased from Clive's paternal grandfather, the park's foundations were laid as a result of wartime necessities.
During the camp's development, a D8 Bulldozer famously sank into the soil, leading the Americans to cover most of the park with three feet of hard-core material from local foundries. This unique feature, though making pegging challenging in some areas, has ensured that the pitches remain resilient in all weather conditions.
In 1971, Clive's parents took ownership of the land, envisioning the transformation of the site into a caravan haven. The park officially opened its gates in 1974, initially offering 60 touring caravan, motorhome, and tent/camping pitches across 30 acres. In those early days, with no electricity, a modest shop, and a single toilet block, the nightly rate was a humble 66p!
As the years unfolded, Clive, Judy, and Clive's father worked diligently, maintaining a parallel Market Garden operation across the road to fund the park's expansion. Today, Lower Lacon Caravan Park spans an impressive 57 acres, making it one of the largest caravan and camping sites in the Midlands. The park caters to diverse accommodation needs, featuring 230 electric points, two toilet and shower blocks, two laundries, an outdoor heated swimming pool, and a well-stocked shop with an off-license.
The addition of J.A.K.K.S Barn, a family bar hosting discos and live entertainment, and the Windmill Lounge Bar, an adult-only venue with a marquee for children, enrich the vibrant community spirit. For the younger visitors, two play areas and a crazy golf course offer endless entertainment. Nature enthusiasts can explore the wide variety of animals, including Alpacas, Sheep, Kune Kune Pigs, Goats, Chickens, and an abundance of wildlife.
From its humble beginnings to its current status as a spacious 57-acre site nestled in the heart of North Shropshire's countryside, Lower Lacon Caravan Park stands as a testament to decades of growth, dedication, and family legacy.
